Viura
Viura is a grape (also known as Macabeo) from the Rioja region of Spain. It is a fairly neutral grape with styles ranging from dry to sweet to sparkling Cava. Its berries are large and thick skinned with low acidity. It can overproduce so both the viticulturalist and the oenologist have to work together on the intent of what the grape will become. For crips whites in White Rioja, it is often blended with Grenache Blanc and Malvasia Bianca. In Cava it is often blended with Xarel-lo and Parellada. It is also found in France’s Minervois region. Viura can produce delicate jasmine aromas and flavors of lychee fruit and with a little aging the flavors of nut and honey come through.
