Verdelho
Verdelho, although widely planted in Portugal, is most known associated with the island of Madeira since the 15th Century. Wines labeled Verdelho from Madeira must contain 85% Verdelho. It is made semi dry, has high acidity with aromas of honeysuckle and flavors of lime, melon, guava and hints of salinity. Historically, the wines were fortified and oxidized to make them sweet and easy to transport across the ocean to become the primary wine for the colonialists.
