Semillon is an early ripening pinkish gold grape with a heavy, almost oily texture.  It’s susceptible to botrytis rot, making it desirable for sweet wines of Sauternes.   It is native to Bordeaux, though it is grown throughout the world.  It’s easy to cultivate into vigorous yields.  Made as a dry white wine, its body is similar to the medium body and acidity of Chardonnay with the flavors of Sauvignon Blanc of lemon, green apple, and pear, with zestier aromas close to the ocean and tropical fruits more inland.   The more ripe it is, the more floral with hints of Honeysuckle, Ginger and Saffron on the nose.
