Sangrantino is a grape from Umbria, Italy that has been growing since at least the 16th Century.  Pliny the Elder wrote of the communal wine sagra (feast) and sacrestia (communion wine), which is how it got its name.  It is a vigorous vine, low yielding and requires a long hot growing season, often ripe well after most other grapes.  Sangrantino has dark inky skins with large seeds. It has one of the highest levels of polyphenol (antioxidants) of any wine.  It has full body, high tannin, medium high acidity, high alcohol with flavors of plum, black olive, cinnamon and licorice.
