CHENIN BLANC
Chenin Blanc is a white grape from the Anjou region in the Loire Valley that can be produced as still dry wine, sweet dessert wines or made into a Sparkling Vouvray. It is on the rise in South Africa, Australia and Mexico. In cooler areas it is usually sweeter with high acidity and full body with quince and green apple flavors. When botrytize rot it is intensely sweet with brioche and nutty notes. When made into a Sparkling Vouvray, it has honey flavors and very floral with honeysuckle notes. Chenin Blanc is a half-sister to Sauvignon Blanc sharing the parent Savagnin making it “Auntie Chinon” to Cabernet Sauvignon. As yields of Chinon Blanc decrease over time, it’s flavors and aromas intensify. She prefers clay soils, which allow her to display more minerality in her aromas. In the warm Mediterranean, Chenin blanc is often made a little sweeter or off dry.
