Cabernet Franc
Cabernet Franc, a Bordeaux grape, is a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, as well Merlot. As such, Cabernet Franc has a similar phenolic compounds to his offspring, creating similar flavor profiles. When you think of Cabernet Sauvignon, it is reminiscent of blackberries, blueberries, and black plums with strong tannins. Cabernet Franc and Carmenere share these flavors but both have fewer seeds than Cabernet Sauvignon which means that there’s less tannin and less need for aging. Cabernet Franc and Carmenere have similar growing habits. Their berries and clusters look identical and they each need long growing seasons, making them susceptible to early frost. Notice the similarities in the ampelography. They all share similar leave structures and lobes. Carmenere and Merlot have their father’s eyes.
