Baga (also known as Tinta Bairrada) is one of the Portuguese grapes used in making Port wines although it grows more in the Bairrada region in Portugal.  Its name literally means droplet.  Both the berries and clusters are small with extremely thick tannic skins and high acidity.  It’s susceptible to rot, thus viticulturalists have to make a decision to either pick early to prevent rot but the wines become more tannic, or harvest later which could be detrimental if there’s a light rain.  The Port style wines age extremely well for many decades because of their acidity, tannin and structure.
