About Me
Leah Canon
I’m creating this blog to educate consumers about warm climate grapes that they may have never heard of before. Eventually, when I have my land and custom crushpad called Copper Grapes (wherein anyone can make wine), I will be growing 52 different varieties of grapes for people to choose from. This is a massive undertaking considering most vineyards and wineries only produce about half a dozen or so different varietals. However, people in SoCal don’t know what to grow and I’ve taken it upon myself to identify grapes that exemplify the best grapes to grow in warm climates in order to create a SoCal identity. Once the best grapes to grow are identified, sub appellations can be created wherein consumers can choose a wine based upon unique terroir and climate characteristics.
I’m certified WSET, level 3 (Wine Spirits Education Trust). I have two boys and two dogs and wine is my life or at least the discovery of wine. The scent and flavor of each unique wine can transcend a person into another place and time, wherein you can taste something that someone else tasted who did something of significance hundreds of years ago. For example, when I taste a Sangiovese with some Montepulciano in it, I’m tasting what the Medici’s drank and what Bartolomeo Bimbi drank, who was one of the first people to identify different grape cultivars in the 1700’s which helped to develop the Italian system for categorizing levels of quality in wine.
